Boric Acid Yeast Infection - Can Boric Acid Cure My Yeast Infection?

Can boric acid cure yeast infection? This is a question that most women ask.

Vaginal yeast infections are caused by a fungus that is normally found in small amounts in the vagina. This fungus is called Candida Albicans. When the conditions are right it begins to grow causing a yeast infection. Some factors that may contribute to yeast infection include:-

- diabetes
- pregnancy
- use of oral contraceptives
- steroids
- antibiotics
- and menopause

Boric acid is a chemical with some antiseptic and anti-fungal properties. It has been used by many women as a natural remedy for vaginal yeast infections. Research studies have shown that it is just as effective as other clinically based medicines. In fact, in one study, boric acid vaginal suppositories resulted in a higher cure rate compared to fluconazole.

In another study conducted in the late eighties and early nineties, Boric acid suppositories were found to be more successful than therapy with topical and oral anti-fungal medications, which had success rates of less than fifty percent.

Boric acid based suppositories are available from various pharmacies. One boric acid suppository product called Yeast Arrest contains boric acid and the herbs Oregon grape root and calendula.

However, there are some concerns about the safety of boric acid as a cure for vaginal yeast infections. Boric acid is toxic and should never be taken internally by mouth or placed on cuts or open wounds. It should not be used for prolonged periods of time beyond the recommended time. Boric acid should not be used by pregnant women. Some of the side effects associated with its use includes vaginal burning and irritation.

As you can see boric acid can be used to cure yeast infections in women. However, always consult your doctor or health advisor before using over-the-counter medicines. Also, always read and follow the instructions that come with medications including the small print. If in doubt talk to your doctor or medical advisor.
